Spotlight: Phil Wocken

Choosing Kansas City for What Matters Most
Phil Wocken and his wife are native Minnesotans who have lived throughout the Midwest. During the COVID pandemic, they traded snow for sunshine and spent four years in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona. Tucson treated them well, but the family soon realized they missed the “Midwest vibe” (IYKYK).
When it came time to think about the future, Kansas City quickly rose to the top of the list. Our blend of Midwest sensibilities, top-ranked schools, exceptional healthcare, safety, four distinct seasons, and a thriving soccer culture sealed the deal. With their oldest starting high school, Phil and his wife wanted a city that could provide their kids with a strong springboard into adulthood—and KC was the clear choice.
Settling Into KC
Having lived in many cities, the Wockens were struck by how instantly welcoming Kansas City felt. “The generosity, friendliness, and genuine kindness of Kansas Citians have made a lasting impression,” Phil shared. “If our early experiences are any indication, I’m excited to meet more of the incredible people who make this city special.”
One of his most surprising discoveries since relocating? The parks. “There are so many, and they’re stunning—long scenic trails, beautiful gardens, massive playgrounds. I might officially be a Park Person now, and I’m totally okay with that.”
Global Mission, Local Connections
Professionally, Phil leads business operations for World View, an aerospace company headquartered in Tucson. His role spans Brand, Communications, HR, IT, and Facilities, all in support of the company’s mission to pioneer aerospace innovation globally.
While his work is global in nature, KC’s strong aerospace, AI, and tech communities have sparked new possibilities. “I’m exploring ways we can engage locally, building partnerships that make sense while staying focused on our worldwide mission.”
What Phil Brings to KC
Throughout his career, Phil has approached challenges with curiosity, creativity, and an entrepreneurial spirit. “I’ve always been a problem solver, and that mindset has shaped my career,” he reflected. Now in Kansas City, he’s eager to channel that energy into partnerships with local leaders to solve meaningful challenges and contribute positively to the community.
One of Phil’s long-term goals is to pay forward the mentorship he’s benefited from over the years. “I want to positively impact the trajectory of 100 Kansas Citians’ lives—whether through mentorship, collaboration, or community-building.” We love this!! ♥️
Building Community & What’s Next
With the moving boxes unpacked, Phil is eager to dive into KC’s tech and startup scene. “Relocating without a built-in network can be tough, but New2KC has already been a fantastic resource in helping me start to find ‘my people’ here.”
Advice for others considering the move? “Come for the quality of life, stay for the opportunity. KC is rare in that you can hustle from 9 to 5 and still make it to your kid’s soccer game. That kind of balance isn’t just possible here—it’s part of the culture.”
A House Divided (but United in Red Fridays)
No Kansas City story is complete without a nod to the Chiefs. “We learned very early in our relocation journey that you can’t call yourself a Kansas Citian without pledging loyalty to the Kingdom,” Phil laughed. “That said, we’re lifelong Vikings fans (don’t hold it against us—at least it’s not the Broncos or Raiders). We’re a house divided this season, but we know the rules: Red Fridays are non-negotiable.”
Want to Connect with Phil?
The best way to connect is via LinkedIn—or out at the soccer fields cheering on his kids. He’s always open to meaningful conversations and new connections.
