Finding a New Chapter in Kansas City

Back in 2017, Casey Jones launched a nonprofit in Tulsa, Oklahoma called the American Dream Center, focused on helping immigrants and refugees adjust to life in the U.S. “It was an incredible experience growing the organization,” Casey shares, “but after a few years, I realized I needed a change to avoid long-term burnout.”

One thing Casey knew for sure: fundraising had always been a strength, and he wanted to go all-in—helping nonprofits grow by connecting passionate supporters with meaningful missions. That decision opened the door to Kansas City, where he joined City Union Mission as a Major Gifts Officer. Today, Casey is sharpening his skills and doubling down on becoming the best fundraiser he can be.

“Fundraising has always been at the heart of what I do. Moving to KC gave me the chance to go all-in and help others get excited about making an impact.”

Loving Life in KC

For Casey and his family, KC has been a natural fit. “It actually reminds me a lot of Tulsa—just on a bigger scale,” he says. “Even though it’s a large city, it still feels like everyone knows each other and genuinely has each other’s back.”

That sense of community has been a welcome surprise. Whether it’s the generosity of neighbors, the energy at a Chiefs game, or the way people show up for local nonprofits, Casey has felt KC’s warmth since day one. “I was nervous moving to a new city without knowing many people, but how easy it is to meet new people made it feel more like home.”

Making an Impact Through Fundraising

At City Union Mission, Casey is part of a team working every day to help the homeless and those in need. The organization offers a wide range of support—helping people get off the streets and take tangible steps toward a better life.

“My role is fundraising, but really it’s about rallying the community,” Casey explains. “I love getting people excited about the impact we’re making together.”

Skills, Lessons, and What KC Gains

Starting and growing a nonprofit taught Casey a crash course in leadership, grit, and perseverance. “One of the biggest things I learned is that in nonprofit work, relationships are everything,” he says. “Real, lasting change doesn’t happen alone—it happens when people come together with a shared purpose.”

That perspective is one he’s so clearly exudes when you spend time with Casey.

Plugging Into the KC Community

Casey has enjoyed connecting with new faces since moving to town and is always on the lookout for networking groups and opportunities to get more plugged in. “I’ve really enjoyed connecting with so many great people here already, and I’m looking forward to meeting even more people as 2025 starts to wrap up.”

He’s also pursuing a big professional milestone—CFRE accreditation—as part of his ongoing commitment to becoming a stronger, more effective fundraiser.
